The world turns on its axis floating majestically through space as we humans continue our dramatic performance art piece known as 'reality'. Some debate remains over the exact dimensions and definitions of this exhibition, but it is more or less agreed that it exists. As a historian I'm really glad I was born in such a buck wild time when in the poker game of special survival, we are going all in without even looking at our cards. After many lifetimes of slow and steady accumulation of skills and resources the hairless quadrupedal mammals have really stepped up their artistic output lately. After beating a living out of a rather reluctant nature and watering the land with an immeasurable flood of our blood, this latest act is completely captivating. We have now developed complex tactics and tools to both grow our food and kill each other all while remaining basically the same as our ancestors. Sure, we talk a big game about civilization and education, but if you look at what we are using all this progress for, its not really that sophisticated or different from chucking spears at Woolly Mammoths until they are extinct. Being an American I have to admit I'm rather scarred of Monsanto and the flying drone armadas, but hey, on this wild ride you can't get off or go backwards. I think it was George Carlin who said 'When you're born, you get a ticket to the freak show. When you're born in America, you get a front row seat." For this reason alone am I happy I was born where I was, for I feel well equipped to deal with whatever lunacy comes my way. It's one hell of a theatrical production watching 7 billion humans exist in a limited space with finite resources. Made up countries, races, religions all engaging in competition, cooperation, conflict almost always without any agreed upon point or purpose beyond consumption... what a show! Some days I can see beyond the psychotic sea of suffering and glimpse our species from a different point of view, let us call it a more cosmic perspective. When seeing it thus, in the glorious context of an unlimited and largely unknown Universe, our little production we got going here is very small, cozy and lovingly familiar despite its melodramatic madness. If you can just take a day off from the confines of your moral conditioning and cultural programming, suddenly this whole thing isn't so bad, but rather funny and fun. So if you are letting the world get you down, or feeling bored with the whole your existence, try and remember that it is all just a show, and it seems that each scene is crazier than the last so just stay tuned in and try to not be tedious.
