Buddha or Bush

Plan APlan B

From the evening of the 17th through the morning of the 28th, for the first time in over two decades, I was silent. I had voluntarily decided to play at bhikku for 10 days and learn an ancient meditation technique that was discovered by Siddhartha Gautama 25 centuries ago. The site was North Fork, the geographical center of California and the technique is Vipassana by name. It is nothing short of phenomenal. In brief western words, it is a way to reprogram the sub-conscious mind and consequently liberate oneself from suffering. After about 50 hours of meditation of this type I can only say that the method is flawless and surprisingly scientific. One of the basic principles is anicca (Pali- pronounced ah-nee-cha), which essentially means the natural law of impermanence. From sub-atomic particles to entire solar systems, all arises and passes. It is only our reactions to this universal truth that leads us to our misery. At an intellectual level, most people in the modern era are ready to accept this fact. The problem is that we can acknowledge all sorts of things, but it doesn't really effect any change in behavior. It is nothing but another of thousands of accepted facts that we are programed with from birth onward and line up like idols on our mental altars. By meditating on the various sensations your body goes through, and by not reacting to them, you are in effect training your entire awareness of the fact of anicca. A man may pass a river in the morning on his way to work, but upon his return it is the same river, but at the same time not the same water. So too is it a fact that on a molecular level, it isn't the same man either. We are all part of a celestial flow of particles that we can neither control nor easily comprehend. After my 50 hours of meditation I went through all sorts of sensations, from euphoric to very painful, but they all passed. By responding with equanimity to my physical sensations, accepting that they are there, beyond my ability to control, and just another testament to the ephemeral and impermanent nature of life I was learning for myself something that was far from academic. After not talking for a few days your mind calms down. No more thinking up shit to say and having to respond to every utterance of others. Just you and the infinite world within. You can say the universe exists out there, or you can acknowledge that you conceive of a universe, and thus is it contained within your mind, like all other things you consider reality. Having accepted that you realize that the purity and quality of your world is utterly your own work. You can go for a walk on a sunny day and think, 'damn sun, stop being so hot and blinding', or you can find shade. So too can you complain and lament the way you view the world, or you can change it. I firmly believe that if all people practiced self awareness, equanimity and meditation this whole humanity thing would have a chance at succeeding, or at least stop being so agonizing. So this was Buddha's plan to save the human race- I can dig it, respect it and even go so far as to think it would work. Somewhere around day 7 I got to wondering, what's the western plan for the eradication of suffering? Then it dawned on me. The western, or perhaps more accurately, the white European mind has found a foolproof solution to human misery- we will unleash our inventions and malicious mentality on the whole planet without any semblance of restraint until there is nothing left. It seems pretty clear that another century like the last and human life on earth will be impossible. So no more humans, no more suffering; that is a straight up fact. So now having seen and walked a little on both paths, I must seriously consider which is preferable, or even better, more viable. I'm still undecided. With so many people on earth it looks like riding the fence just ain't going to suffice anymore. Granted humanities age old partners-Wars, Famines, Plagues- might rear their heads and postpone the decision for a few more lifetimes. Sooner or later Man is going to have to choose however. I like Buddha's way a lot. It appeals to me on a very deep level and accentuates all that I love about people. Having said that, I must concede that given my knowledge of history I can't help but see the western plan to be a sure thing, and Buddha's but the divine dream of the wise. As more and more of us enigmatically problematic humans arrive here on planet earth, it is clear that we are going to have to go down one path or the other. Looks like a win win to me if the goal is to stop the incessant pain of being human! I read only one thing the whole time I was at North Fork, and it was on a bottle of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap that out of desperation I read while defecating: "For one God's Spaceship Earth, with Bomb & Gun, we're All-One or none!" Think that pretty much lays the choice out pretty clear. We can all be Buddhas or Bushs... no matter how much we may think otherwise, we all got to collectively pick one program or the other; looks like we are leaning towards the later at present, could just be my perspective though.

The Marxists?

Today as I was perusing the news, as I'm want to do from time to time, and I found this little gem of a story. In brief, it says that a Marxist group name the Revolutionary Struggle claimed responsibility for throwing a bomb at the US embassy. I find this hilarious for a number of reasons:

  1. What sort of pansy waste organization is proud of the fact that they threw, and missed mind you, a grenade at a US emblem?
  2. How could this possibly further the cause of the international working man?
  3. 16 years after the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe you'd think that at least one group of radicals could brainstorm to produce a cooler name.

On that last point, let it be known that there are several finely named leftist groups out there. The Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka and Sendero Luminoso of Peru both have fabulous and fitting names. It just seems that our old pro-prole anti-imperialist European Marxist groups miss out. It is a new era and they are still fucking around with lame ass titles like Red Brigades and Revolutionary Guard. Perhaps you could incite more class consciousness if you had a more appealing, less vague name. Like say- Fuck Anyone Rich- F.A.R. for short. Or perhaps something like The Spartan Socialists. Of course, just lobbing the sporadic grenade at the occasional embassy emblem is downright preposterous by today's standards. The Arabs have raised the bar so high these days that you'd have to drive a busload of children and dynamite into a nuclear reactor to really generate the sort of publicity they clearly want.

Malthusian Mahem

Scientists have released various reports that all point to 2007 being one of record breaking heat. This coupled with an exponentially growing population is going to make this year rather interesting. I myself am rather excited about this prospect, seeing as how crisis always precipitates change. Here are some of the forecasts for '07:
Deepening drought in Australia.
Stronger typhoons in Asia.
Floods in Latin America.
Long story short, shit is going to go down. Say what you will about politics, all leaders are essentially in power because the majority of the population is not starving. You can read a 800 page book about the antecedents to the French Revolution- but the long and short of it is there was a bread shortage in 1789. Wonder what Americans will do when our traditional breadbasket (the Midwest) turns into a desert over the next few decades? I can't help but notice the similarity between the earths behavior and what a human body does when it gets a cold. Does that mean modern mankind is an illness and global warming is the earth's immune system? Seeing as how I've been precocious enough for one day, I'll end this entry like the historical hack that I am- "The power of population is so superior to the power of the earth to produce subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race. The vices of mankind are active and able ministers of depopulation. They are the precursors in the great army of destruction, and often finish the dreadful work themselves. But should they fail in this war of extermination, sickly seasons, epidemics, pestilence, and plague advance in terrific array, and sweep off their thousands and tens of thousands. Should success be still incomplete, gigantic inevitable famine stalks in the rear, and with one mighty blow levels the population with the food of the world." -Thomas Malthus

Light

After several days of rain
you come to expect the same
then something else will occur
show you nothing in life is sure
this planet is one of shinning grace
thus do I meditate upon our place
if we should aspire to any true worth
we must cling forever to mother earth

Kikuchiyo

laborious nights in a crazy reality
do i blame them or do i blame me
can't really go and hate on the hive
all contributors while we are alive
thus I make an offering while i can
endeavor to inspire my fellow man
just one life is an awful short time
to try and produce a quality rhyme
be that as it may this is my place
kicking it with the whole human race

The Real Perspective of the Solar System

See what I mean?

Another Year

The world has made another successful orbit around our sun. If their is anything for humans to celebrate, this is it. We live on our small little rock watching the stars wander their celestial paths above as we move around in our infinitesimally small corner of the universe. How can one get so caught up in such a small roll? Why bother to build up castles made of sand when we can see the ocean all around us, up upon our shores patiently awaiting the day that we come crumbling down into its waves. It is really all very beautiful; from the choreography of the stars, right down to the little dance we call human life. I feel infinitely blessed to be able to enjoy my funny little existence for yet another year. Being free in a land of slaves is a strange sort of blessing. Without a cosmic sense of humor I doubt I would have made it this far, and thus do I insist on laughing at this world. I chuckle at the nations filled with nationalists. Point and laugh at the hilariously attired young capitalists trying so hard to be distinguishable from all the other spiritual retards. I see in our little world the echo and reflection of the perfect timeless immensity of this limitless universe. With that sort of perspective it is impossible to not laugh at all the people with furrowed brows and looks of anxiety across their puzzled faces. Everyday I witness humans trying valiantly to extricate themselves from the tininess of our individual lives. Don't they realize that their carbon is still the property of all existence, soon to be redistributed as the universe sees fit. I would hope for something more for my fellow man in this seamless symphony, but such a request would seem a sacrilege amid this breathtakingly exquisite reality.
